This Section covers the 1990 - 1993 Mustang, however, the body style changed in in 1987 where the Fox-Body Mustang received its first significant redesign since it was introduced in 1979. Both the interior and exterior were changed.

The exterior design was very similar to the earlier turbocharged SVO - with more of an "Aero" look, consistent with Ford's styling direction for all its lines. As the SVO was discontinued for 1987 anf beyond, the models were now limited to the LX and the GT.

The 302 cu in "5.0" fuel injected V8 was standard on the GT and optional on the LX. The 2.3 L four-cylinder was also fuel injected. No other engines were available.

Changes by Year:

  • NOTE: All Ford Mustangs built between March 27, 1989, and the end of model-year 1990 received a small, a passenger-side dashboard 25th anniversary emblem and a galloping-horse logo.
  • 1990. A driver's-side airbag became standard.

  • 1990. A limited run of 4,103 emerald green exterior, and white leather interior 5.0 LX convertibles, and a limited run of 5,897 silver exterior, and grey interior 5.0 GT hatchbacks wereto be produced for a contest held by 7-Up, but the contest was cancelled and the cars were sold as special editions.

  • 1991. "Pony" wheels replaced the "Turbine" wheels across the board on all 5.0 V8 equipped cars. The 2.3L I4 engines received an increase in horsepower from 88 to 105 because of a revised cylinder head and two spark plugs per cylinder.

  • 1992 - 1993. Three special-edition 5.0 LX convertibles were released in the spring. These models sported with Vibrant Red exteriors with Oxford white leather interiors in 1992, Canary Yellow exterior with black leather interior, or Vibrant white exterior with white leather interior, for 1993.

  • 1993. Ford switched to cast hyper-eutectic pistons for all 302 cu in V8 engines and re-rated the 5.0 GT at 205 hp and 275 ft lbs of torque. This was due to a minor revision in the camshaft profile, and other various small changes.

  • 1993. The newly established Ford SVT division, showcased its work with the release of a 1993 Ford Mustang"SVT Cobra". The car featured a slightly tweaked 302 cu in V8 that produced 235 hp and 280 ft lbs of torque.

This special offering featuring more subdued styling than the GT, with a revised front fascia and more agressive rear spoiler most notable. The Cobra's V8 used Ford's new GT-40 high-performance engine pieces which allowed the Cobra to sail through the 1⁄4 mile in the low 13 second range.

  • 1993. A special Cobra R model was also produced in 1993. It also used engine found in the regular SVT Cobra, however it featured larger brakes, Koni shocks and struts, an engine oil cooler, a power steering cooler, and a factory rear seat delete. The Cobra R was "sold under the guise of a "factory" racer, and as such, air conditioning radio/tape player, and power windows.

The car was to be sold to those with a valid professional race driver's license, those some reached the hands of the public through second party sales.
