Information about this item:
1960 Plymouth - General

Chrysler introduced its compact car, dubbed the "Valiant," as a 1960 model. This all-new car was not initially identified as a Plymouth model and was considered a distinct brand of car for 1960. Next year, it would become a Plymouth sub-series. In this, its first year, the Valiant was assembled by Dodge Division but sold for the most part by Plymouth dealers. It was an immediate success and enjoyed a high rate of sales.

Also new for 1960 was the "Slant Six" OHV six cylinder engine. It was an all new design canted over 30 degrees from vertical and using "thin wall" casting techniques to decrease weight. Offered in two sizes: 170 CID "low deck" for the new Valiant and 225 CID "raised deck" for the full-size Plymouths, it was an outstanding engine that would have a long life and used until 1988.  The engine was called the "30-D Economy Six" engine by Plymouth. In mid-model year an aluminum cylinder block was offered.

All 1960 full-size Plymouths had a few common major styling changes, and this seemed to impact sales. Most obvious was a new grille comprised of close-spaced horizontal blades accented with thin, vertical division bars. The front fenders had a wing-like look, with feature lines wrapping around the body corners to the front wheel openings, creating a sort of a cove just ahead of the wheel cutout. Thin moldings were used to accent the sweep of this unique front fender treatment. The rear fins remained and were even more prominent.

A 1960 Fury experimental prototype with a gas turbine engine evidenced Chrysler Corporation's continued interest in this field. The Plymouth XNR Sports experimental dream car appeared this season. A fleet of "Hyper-Pack" equipped slant six Valiants took the top seven positions in the ten-lap Compact Car Race at Daytona Speedway on January 31, 1960. Three Valiants, driven by Marvin Panch, Roy Schecter, and Larry Frank, then placed 1-2-3 in the twenty lap main event in front of a coast-to-coast television audience.

Plymouth dropped into the 4th position in terms of sale, producing 447,722 cars, now behind Rambler by a margin of 24,292 units. Plymouth's new fleet sales department helped sell many taxicabs and police cars, saving the brand from further losses in sales.

Plymouth Models -

1960 VALIANT V-100 6-CYL

The Valiant was offered in 4-door sedan and wagon body styles. Features included unitized body construction, torsion bar front suspension, seven-dip rust proofing, Lustre-Bond exterior finish, and 12-volt electrical system. Valiant styling features included a long hood/short deck look, a high degree of body sculpturing, large wheel cutouts, large, trapezoid-shaped radiator grille with delicate criss-cross pattern insert, dual headlamps, "cat's eyes" taillights, and rear deck lid tire cover stamping.

The low-priced V-100 models had a short, bright metal molding extending forward from the taillights. A new overhead valve 'Slant Six' engine and three-speed manual floor-shift transmission were standard equipment. Gray cloth interiors were used for V-100 models

1960 VALIANT V-200 6-CYL

The V-200 was the upscale Valiant line. It featured bright metal side trim moldings extending from the front wheel opening into the taillight. The trim curved upwards, below rear ventipanes, to follow the rear fender contour. Interiors for the high-line cars were available in three choices of color and featured vinyl seat bolsters and Nylon cloth inserts.

1960 SAVOY and DELUXE SUBURBAN 6-CYL and V-8

The Savoy was the low-priced line for the consumer market, but economy level "Fleet Special" editions were provided for commercial customers. Standard equipment for the Savoy and DeLuxe Suburbans included oil filter, turn signals, dual sun visors, and five tubeless blackwall tires. Fleet Specials had content deletions but otherwise appeared the same on the exterior.

Savoys had no model nameplate, straight side trim moldings from the front door back to taillights, and single "Jet Age" missile medallions on the rear fins.

1960 BELVEDERE and CUSTOM SUBURBAN - 6-CYL and V-8

The Belvedere was Plymouth's medium range offering with the Custom Suburban as its station wagon counterpart. Passenger cars had "Belvedere" in script on the front fender coves and three shield medallions on the tailfins. Standard equipment included all Savoy features plus front arm rests and cigarette lighter.

The Custom Suburbans did not carry front fender signatures. Nine-passenger Custom Suburban came standard with oversized tires and a power tailgate window.

1960 FURY and SPORT SUBURBAN 6-CYL and V-8

The Fury and Sport Suburban were Plymouth's high-level offerings. The Sport Fury as a premium performance line was dropped. The  two models' standard equipment contained all items found on Belvederes plus electric clock, chrome stone shields, backup lights, and lockable glove box, wide, horizontally-ribbed rocker panel underscores with rear extensions, upper belt line moldings and large circular tail fin medallions, and "Fury" front fender scripts on the passenger cars. the performance engines were available across the entire passenger car line.

The Sport Suburban station wagon lacked front fender scripts and was equipped, at regular price, with oversize tires and power tailgate window when sold as a nine-passenger car with rear-facing third seat. Plymouth started calling Suburbans "station wagons" for this year, although they were still in a separate Suburban Series. Suburbans with each distinct trim level were grouped with their comparable passenger car series to better illustrate the level of standard trim and equipment.
