The tail lights on the LX model were slightly revised, while the GT had theirs covered with a specific louvered treatment, giving an entirely different look. The rear quarter glass windows lost the louvered treatment and now were simply a single piece of glass reading "Mustang" at the bottom. GT models did retain the fog lights while, new "turbine" style 15-inch wheels were standard on this model. The LX 5.0 (V8) utilized the previous GT-specific alloys used in 1985 and 1986.

The 302 cu in "5.0" V8 was standard on the GT and optional on the LX. The was discontinued while the 2.3 L four-cylinder gained fuel injection. No other engines were available.

Changes by Year:

• 1987. V8-powered Mustangs received new E7TE cylinder heads and forged aluminum pistons with valve reliefs, as opposed to the flat-tops used in the previous iteration. These cylinder heads were adopted from the light truck series as the 1986 swirl-port design had demonstrated some performance issues. Power ratings jumped to 225 hp and 300 ft. lbs of torque.
  
  
• 1988. no major changes in the body and interior were made, although the T-top roof option for hatchbacks was discontinued in midyear.
  
  
• 1989 . The Mustang's speed density computer system was replaced with a mass air system (the 1988 Mustangs sold in California utilized this new MAF system). This change resulted in a slightly reduced factory horsepower rating, but for the aftermarket, it made Mustangs much easier to modify. With the mass air system, changes made to the intake, engine, and exhaust system would be recognized and compensated for by the ECU, resulting in a correct air/fuel ratio and optimum power.

NOTE: All Ford Mustangs built between March 27, 1989, and the end of model-year 1990 received a small, a passenger-side dashboard 25th anniversary emblem and a galloping-horse logo.
