By 1967 Buick's GS (Grand Sport) was firmly established as a supercar, as muscle cars were then called. However, 1967 was the first year that the GS was a separate model, whereas before, it had been an option on the Skylark. For 1967, Buick also broke new ground - scooping all other GM muscle car offerings by coming up with the GS340, a small block version of the 400 which was equipped as its big brother with the exception of a 340 V8 in lieu of the new 400 introduced in the GS. Both cars sold in large enough numbers to continue them for the period 1968-72, though the new 350 cu. in. engine would replace the aging 340 (based on the 1961-63 aluminum V8) in 1968.
