1954 DeSoto Ads |
|||||
After the sales surge of 1953, 1954 was downright disappointing. The drop in sales was better than 40% falling back from 130,404 to a measley 76,579. A few things contributed to the drop. One, the styling was about three years out of vogue, with the cars looking like 1951 GM products. Two, Dodge, who had introduced their own Hemi in 1953, that got a lot of press and was about $500 cheaper . . Three, they forgot to talk about horsepower - which was up 10 ponies to 170. (All the ads talked about the new Powerflite auto trans, but everyone had one by 1954 . . . so?). The net/net was that DeSoto (and all of Chrysler Corp.) knew styling and HP was now paramount - and they had some great stuff waiting in the the wings. Hurry up 1955!
