1935 DeSoto Ads

In 1935, and because of the Airflow's lukewarm sales, DeSoto added a conventional model, the Airstream series as a companion car. Styling features included a sloping V-type radiator grille, two rows of horizontal “Windstream” hood louvers and bullet shaped headlights mounted on pedestals above the front fender catwalks. Airstreams were about $220 cheaper than comparable Airflows.

In an attempt to make it look less radical, the DeSoto Airflow was given a new front fascia with a slightly V-shaped radiator. The 1935 grille was more sloping than rounded, increasing the length of the hood. There were now only three horizontal hood louvers instead of 11.

1935 Production was 20,784 Airstreams, and in spite of a massive ad campaign, only 6,797 Airflows.  DeSoto would give the Airflow one more try in 1936, but Edsel Ford would have a better idea.

The Automotive History Preservation Society Digital Documents Library provides these materials for educational, or research, or personal use. You should not republish these materials for financial gain without informing the original author or publisher.

The Airstream joined the Airflow line in 1935. The more conventional looks saved DeSoto from an early demise.
