While Plymouth's total sales declined slightly in 1966 due to sagging Barracuda production (the design was aging), Plymouth mid-sized cars sales rose. In 1966 the mid-size unit production was 189,252 an increase of 29,717 over 1965.

Some of this rise was directly the result of new styling, which was much closer to the competition - and other of it was the result of hyping Plymouth's performance. Satellite, the performance model, increased sales by 12,957, accounting for almost half the total increase in mid-size cars.
