1954 Studebaker Ads

In 1954, Studebaker continued with the redesigned car introduced the year earlier. The 2-door coupe with a central pillar was called the "Starlight." while the more expensive hardtop coupe was called the "Starliner." The front end of the new Studebaker was lower than contemporaries, and the car was lower overall than many of the Big Three offerings.

A 4-door sedan was also offered  using a take off of the coupe's low slung looks. A new 2-door station wagon called the "Conestoga" was added to the Champion and Commander lines.

The V8 continued with the 232 CID  version introduced in 1951, with the power now at 127 HP due to an increase in the compression ratio. The power of the L-head inline-six remained unchanged at 85 HP.

Production for 1954 halved from 1953, down to 81,939, due mostly to the over-selling of the swoopy 1953 coupe, which had sold an unprecedented 78,640 units in 1953.

Since Studebaker's V-8 was not much involved in the power wars the Company decided to tout its cars' great mileage. In a power-hungry sales cycle, it likely turned off potential buyers and resulted in a sales drop of 50%.
