Design changes for the full-size Pontiacs were minor in nature. The front bumper center post now featured a narrow verticle endura strip. This strip served to create a stronger visual division between the grille openings. The eventual elimination of chrome bumpers on full-sized American sedans had now begun. Side vent widows on the front doors were also eliminated. Headrests were mandated for the outside front seat passengers. At the rear, the overall design was softened from 1968. The full-size Grand Prix was dropped from the B-body line and successfully joined forces with the A-body camp. Engine and transmission choices carried over from '68.
