1969 Grand Prix Ads Pt. 1

In February 1969, John Z. DeLorean was promoted to the top spot in the Chevrolet Motor Division. An era ended at Pontiac on that day. The inspiration and innovation that JZD fostered and promoted within the division died after he left the house. DeLorean did leave the Pontiac faithful one last gift - the 1969 Grand Prix.

Acting on a suggestion from product development specialist, Ben Harrison, DeLorean gave the go-ahead for a brand new concept within GM. Reduce the size of the personal luxury platform my stretching the A-body chassis wheelbase three inches. This "A-special" platform resulted in the longest hood in the industry.

One new feature pioneered on the GP was the hidden radio antenna. A receiver wire was embedded in the windshield. No more broken antenna masts, but damaged windshields became more expensive to replace.

Engine choices were limited to V8 power. The Model J variant received the 400 cubic inch powerplant, while the Model SJ hosted the larger and more powerful 428 c.i. engines. The heavy duty three-speed manual transmission was standard, with two four-speed manuals and the 3-speed TH400 automatic offered as extra-cost options.

This major change in package content and size resulted in a four-fold increase in sales numbers.

Grand Prix
production total: 112,486
