In the second year of a two-year design cycle, the GTO changed appearance very slightly. The grille pattern was modified, the front bumper lost its arrowhead emblem, and the tail lights moved from inside the rear bumper to a position above the bumper. The doors lost their ventipane vent windows. Engine choices included: 400 cubic inch 2-bbl rated at 290 hp; 400 ci 4-bbl/350 hp; 400 Ram Air 4-bbl/366 hp; and at the top of the heap the 400 Ram Air IV 4-bbl/370 hp. A skewed response to the Plymouth Road Runner resulted in the release of the psychedelic-decal-festooned performance/appearance option called The Judge. The Judge was introduced during the Chicago Auto Show in February of 1969. This $337 extra-cost package was originally designed to compete with the low-cost, performance B-body, Mopar. However, on its way to the showroom, The Judge morphed from an economy GTO powered by a 350 H.O. into the top-of-the-line A-body powered by either of two Ram Air 400s. The first two thousand “program” cars were painted a bright red-orange color that Pontiac called Carousel Red. Many of these early Judges were campaigned by dealerships across the country at local dragstrips. Most of those cars were equipped with RAIV engines and many of the more serious racers ordered their Judges without radios and minus power steering, power brakes or other weight-adding options.
