DeSoto continued to suffer from the buyer's questions: Was it a high priced Dodge, or a low-priced Chrysler. Combine that with the horrid recession that hit in 1958 and it seemed to be the death knell for DeSoto. Some say going to corporate motors did not help either, as DeSoto was stuck with the 383 version of the B engine while Chrysler moved up to the 413. The Adventurer did receive the 2 4-barrel high output version, but since Dodge offered the same engine which paled even that distinction (and, in fact, Dodge had an even more powerful race version of the motor). The good news - the high output Adventurer engine was available in any DeSoto. 1958 had been a horrible year, with only 49,445 sold, but 1959 was worse, with 45,724 units produced.
