The 1950 Buick was restyled with a grille so toothy that Consumer Reports commented that "a toothbrush for the dentures comes extra." Halfway into the 1949 model year, the Special had received all-new bodywork, the first fully postwar design for that series, which was continued into 1950. The engine remained the 248 CID which had been used since 1937. The 1950 Super came with a single two-barrel carburetor on a new higher displacement 263 CID "Fireball" I-8. For the Roadmaster, the "Sweepspear" chrome side trim had proved so popular in 1949 year that it was made standard on most body styles. That long wheelbase sedan was stretched an extra four inches. The Special's new bodywork paid off with 337,909 sold, up from a mere 10,408 in 1949. The Super also set an all time record of 251,883 sold, but Roadmaster sales fell to 75,034 (12% of total Buick sales), mainly to the surging popularity of the Special. All in all, Buick sold 664,826 units more than doubling 1949.
