All in the Family – Dodge that is!

At the Goodguys 2nd Indy National, we spied this stunning 1942 Dodge COE (that’s Cab Over Engine for you non-trucker types). Owned and built by Tim Maness of Means, Kentucky, the truck began its life in 1942 as a “barn truck” that Tim found in a Nebraska junkyard in 2003. After 10 years of work, Tim’s truck has been transformed from a “barn truck” into an awesome 4-door dually that pulls Tim’s car trailer.

What makes this truck unique, besides its striking appearance, is that underneath all that paint and chrome are all Dodge components. See, Tim is a Dodge guy from day one. His father-in-law even owns a Dodge dealership, and Tim has his own restoration business specializing in (what else?) Dodges.

Here’s what Tim did:

Starting with the Cab of his ’42, Tim found another ’42 cab (at the same Nebraska junkyard) and used it to create the 4-door cab you see here. Tim then mounted it on the complete chassis from a 1996 Dodge 3500 truck. Under that chassis, he used the rear from a 1997 Dodge heavy duty truck (but in standard width) with 17” dually wheels fitted with 285/70/17 General tires. The front suspension is coil overs with disk brakes from the ’96 Dodge 3500. Staying all in the Dodge family, Tim installed a 5.9 L Cummins Turbo Diesel and 47RE automatic transmission from a 1997 Dodge truck. The truck runs as smooth as a luxury car and as quiet as one too.  Finishing out the exterior of the truck, Tim used the fenders from a 1978 Dodge stepside pickup mounted to a custom bed.

Inside this beauty, Tim used the stock ’42 dash fitted with custom gauges, an IdidiT chrome steering column with a “banjo” style steering wheel, and Lokar pedals and gearshift with a custom made accelerator linkage. But, keeping the interior in the Dodge family, Tim used the front and rear seats from a 2006 Dodge Caravan minivan. The beauty of these seats is that the rear seat in the 2006 Caravan is mounted using latches for easy removal. Tim used these latches and can easily remove the seat for engine access. The overhead console is also from the Caravan. The rest of the interior was done in gray leather and trim for a warm and comfy ride.

So, this ’42 Dodge COE is all in the Dodge family, and Tim has one totally cool tow vehicle for his car trailer.

This side shows off the extra set of doors (from another '42 cab).

Those rear fenders are from a 1978 Dodge stepside pickup -- keeping everything Dodge!

The bed of this beauty holds the gooseneck show car trailer

The interior features front and rear seats (covered in beautiful gray leather) from a 2006 Dodge Caravan.
