It's no secret that the new "5.0" Mustang lost momentum to the recently introduced Chevrolet Camaro in the last two years, but the car that defined "pony car - the Ford Mustang regained the sales lead, just as Ford's (And Wild About Cars) began their "Countdown" to the car's 50th anniversary.

As those of us in the hobby know, there are few rivalries that have been more intense than the Mustang versus Camaro battle - which has been waged for over 45 years. and Mustang can't be complacent - the Challenger - is also coming on strong with 27.2% sales gain in June.

When Mustang made its debut almost 50 years ago, the car had no competition from General Motors for it's first 2 1/2 years. But once Camaro came on the scene, it had its times when it swapped sales leads with the original pony car. But the as we moved into this Century, the Camaro fell so far behind that it was dropped in 2002. And with the demise of the Firebird as well, Mustang ran wild.

But Chevy reintroduced the Camaro at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, but it did not reach production until 2009, with the first car rolling off the assembly line in February 2009 as a 2010 model. It was an inauspicious debut, in light of the Corporation's plunge into bankruptcy shortly afterwards. But the 2010 Chevy Camaro was an instant success that quickly reshaped the established order in the pony car segment.

Significant was that the Camaro outsold Mustang rival in 2011, which was the first time since 1985. Ever since, Mustang only regained the sales crown once and a while. And the Camaro seemed to be off to a good start in 2013, but Ford has pulled out all the stops in touting the car, and people came around to the excellent performance of the new V6 and "5.0" quad cam V8. The result is that for the first six months Mustang outsold Camaro and can claim victory for the first half of 2013.

The big news for Mustang fans, is not a sales lead, but that the long-awaited replacement for the aging styled car is about to make its first appearance - rumored to be at next year's New York Auto Show, coordinating a sales hoopla tied to the original Mustang public debut at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964.

For those Mustang lovers, remember that the original pony car has sold 10.2 million Mustangs in its close to 50-year life span. Camaro is a far distant second in sales sweepstakes - in its debut 47 years ago, Chevy has delivered only 3,450,000 Camaros.

The 300 HP V6 model has made the base car an aggresive performer and yet a good value

The convertible has always added pizzaz to Mustang sales

It all started here (1964 Mustang Convertibe and the venerable 271 HP 289 Hi-Po V8)
