Audi has confirmed that it will build the electric supercar that made its debut in concept form last month at the Frankfurt auto show.

Audi has confirmed that it will build the electric e-Tron supercar that made its debut as a concept last month at the Frankfurt auto show.

Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi of America, told Automotive News that the sleek car, which uses lithium-ion batteries, could go on sale in the United States in two to three years. “I expect we will see running examples in the next 24 months,” he said.

Built on an aluminum space frame, the e-Tron’s bolt-on parts – doors, covers, sidewalls and roof – are made of a fiber-reinforced plastic. The coupe runs on four electric motors, one at each wheel, which produce an equivalent of 313 horsepower. At the concept introduction, Audi said the car would have a range of about 150 miles.

Mounted behind the rear axle are a pair of electric motors, while the front pair are mounted on the front axle. Each motor has its own cooling system, and the package gives the car a rear-biased weight distribution of 42/58, Audi said.

One unique feature of the concept is its use of a heat pump. Rather than using a supplement electric heater to warm the interior, the e-Tron employs a mechanical heat pump, similar to those used to heat homes, which the company said was more energy-efficient.

While promoting the advantages of electric mobile power in Frankfurt — efficiency, environmental gentleness, instant torque and lots of it — Audi has historically championed diesel power, and in fact its press kit for the e-Tron notes that “electric drive systems are still very much outsiders” and “there is still a lot of work to do before electric cars are ready for volume production.”

Apparently not quite as much work as Audi once thought.
