In their late 80s, Frank and Dorothy White set out to restore their 1914 Paige so they could take it on a cruise as part of the 2011 Back to the Bricks Festival in Flint, Michigan.

For 1914, the Paige automobile came in two lines, the lower-cost Model 25 and the higher-end Model 36, which started at $1275 and could cost as much as $2000 if equipped with all available options.

In April 2011, at age 89, antique car enthusiast Frank White was preparing to experience his first Back to the Bricks. Frank was in the midst of refurbishing a 1914 black four-door Paige touring car with a black canvas top.

"It's a lot of fun. It's a lot of work," said White, formerly of Flushing, New York. "I've worked on cars all my life, and I just continue. My health is pretty good. ... I'm not going to slow down until I keel over."

Since February of that year, White and his wife Dorothy had been working on the car's upholstery, canvas top and curtains, and the engine, and they had a little help from one of their sons, Rendell White, 54. Frank and Dorothy made a good team working on the car for about four to five hours a day, with Frank working on the engine while his wife did the sewing.

The top was tattered and torn and the upholstery was in bad condition when Frank bought the car in 1989 from someone who had purchased it in 1955 from a Flint, Michigan doctor who had purchased the car new. Dorothy said she was up for the challenge but wasn't sure if her sewing machine would be. But the new project her husband wanted to take on didn't faze her at all.

"He don't surprise me," said Dorothy, 86, at the time. "He's been into cars quite awhile."

For 1914, the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company offered two models of the Paige, the "25" in two models, starting at $900, and the "36", starting at $1275, in six models. The Whites' car is the higher-end 36 model, specifically the "Glenwood" 5-passenger touring car. For 1914, the Paige 36 featured all electric starting and lighting, 116-inch wheelbase, left-side drive with center control, 4-cylinder engine putting out 26 hp, cork insert multiple-disc clutch, silent chain drive for the camshaft, pump, and generator, deep-tilted 10-inch cushions, genuine mohair top and boot, 34 x 4-inch tires (non-skid in rear) on demountable rims, and crown fenders.

In addition to the Paige, the Whites have four other antique cars including 1923, 1925, and 1927 Model T Fords and a 1930 Model A Ford. But Frank chose to drive the Paige in the Cruise because he wanted something that one doesn't see every day.

The Back to the Bricks Michigan Mitten Cruise, on which they took the car and which is part of the Back to the Bricks Festival, traveled through Port Huron, Bay City, Alpena, Mackinaw City, Traverse City, Ludington, Holland and Brooklyn before ending back in Flint. The Festival is a five day event held in downtown Flint that includes car shows, automotive displays, and other events. The 2013 edition takes place Aug. 13 to 17.




The engine is a four-cylinder putting out 26 horsepower.
