Two new cabriolets blast to 60 mph in less than 3.4 seconds.

by Michael Strong, Detroit Bureau

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 continues, as the German maker is introducing not one, but two new cabriolet models: the 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S.

The two new models will be introduced to the public in November, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of the 911 Turbo, at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

The new droptops might as well be labeled fast and faster as the 911 Turbo Cabriolet uses a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six developing 520 horsepower to get from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

However, if you need to get to 60 mph a little faster, the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet adds an extra 40 hp for a total of 560 to drop that time to 3.1 seconds. That makes them just bit slower than the hardtop versions that clock in at 3.2 and 2.9 seconds respectively.

The cabrios top out at 195 mph, just 1 mph smaller than their hardtop brethren.

Compared with the previous convertible models, the new 911 Turbo Cabriolet’s deliver 30 more horsepower and are 0.2 seconds faster in terms of their standard acceleration, according to Porsche.

They’re also decent on fuel as both models are rated at 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

The new models utilize a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission as standard and the new PTM all-wheel drive, as well as rear-axle steering and active aerodynamics. The rear-axle steering positively impacts handling and the active aerodynamics are adjusted to offer optimum efficiency or driving performance at the touch of a button, depending on the driver’s selection.

The interior is similar to the 911 Turbo Coupe. The S-model boasts a extensive range of features, including an exclusive interior available in Black/Carrera Red and adaptive Sport Seats Plus with 18-way adjustment and memory. In addition, the backrest shells of the seats are leather trimmed with double stitched seams, and various elements are made from lightweight carbon fiber.

As usual, the Bose sound system is standard, but for the first time, a Burmester sound system is available as an option. The radar-controlled adaptive Cruise Control system, camera-based road sign and speed limit recognition function and reverse camera are also available as options.

Finally, this much speed and performance comes at a price. In this case, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet comes in at $160,700 and the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet costs $193,900, which does not include destination charges of $950.
