Harv's license plate tell it all -- his 442 is a W30 !

1970 Oldsmobile 442 - Harv Goldhammer's "I'm a W30" is no lie

After two days of prowling around the huge Alameda County Fairgrounds covering the Goodguys 21st Summer Get-together in Pleasanton CA. we saw more than 3,000 rods, customs, muscle cars, resto rods and everything in between.

We’ll be reporting on the ones that caught our eye and we want to start with Harv Goldhammer's  beautiful 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W30. It is those last three digits “W30” that set this 442 apart from its kinsmen. The W30 option in 1970 was the “high water mark” for Oldsmobile performance in the 60’s. The car is close to original with an engine rebuild and typical  “Day 2” modifications.

Harv has owned the car since 1999. The car is mostly stock with  92K original miles on it. It is a true  W30. Opening the hood you find  an Olds 455 with factory aluminum 4 bbl intake and carb,  and “F” heads nestled between those distinctive red plastic inner fender panels. The functional twin Outside Air Induction (OAI) hood scoops feed fresh cool air to the big block Olds.

The power is transmitted through a Muncie 4 speed close ratio (2.20 first gear)  transmission  to an Oldsmobile 12 bolt posi rear end with factory 3.91:1  gears.. The 455 was freshened up with a .040 overbore and an Engle 22-25-10 cam and kit. Exhaust gases escape through a set of Doug Thorley headers, with 2 1/2 inch Flowmaster mufflers and pipes.

The car sparkles in the sun with its factory  Burnish gold paint, with black hood scoop and side stripes and the optional rear spoiler wing. Harv has put on reproduction 15” Oldsmobile SSI steel wheels with BFG Radial TA’s. The interior is factory stock with black bucket seats, center console and that factory Hurst 4-speed shifter with the correct black ball grip. No frills here – just an AM radio, power steering and manual disc brakes (that will build up your right leg!).

Dr. Oldsmobile would be proud to see the care that Harv has taken with his W30. And we thank Harv for bringing it out to be seen.
