These plastic or paper cards were primarily intended for dealership service department use. As the information represented by the Vehicle Identification Number increased, the interpretation of that number became increasingly difficult. These cards were intended to aid the service personnel in the expedient decoding of these identification numbers. Beginning in 1972, GM included engine codes in their 13-digit VIN. In 1981, the federal government mandated a new 17-digit VIN that added country of origin, manufacturer, restraint system, and a check digit. Each card is two-sided, with GM passenger car information (seven divisions, including Canadian vehicles) featured on one side, and GM Truck information printed on the opposite side. note: Information included on these cards reflects information available at the beginning of the model year. Any changes occurring during the model year can NOT be determined from these cards. |
