It's official; Ford's Mustang is 50 years old this week!

And what a great 50 years it has had. Few nameplates have completed a 50-year continuous run – at all times staying true to the original concept – in the face of hurdles like a few gas crisis, emissions and safety laws, and even buyer apathy!

To commemorate this anniversary, Wild About Cars & No Limits e-Magazine have been running a series of articles since last April called "Countdown to the 50th". These articles have highlighted what our editors felt were significant Mustang models, options or changes. You can see all these articles HERE.

This week, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, Ford has gone "back to the future" with the Mustang. As they did back in 1964, a new Mustang was disassembled and sent to the observation deck of the Empire State building in Manhattan. The same techniques that were used in 1964 were used on the 2015 car – with it being "cut" into segments so it could fit on the freight elevator and then reassembled on the 86th floor. And, of course, the new 2015 Mustang is on display right now at the New York Auto Show.

Meanwhile, to commemorate this significant milestone, Ford has announced 50 Year Limited Edition Mustang - of which an appropriate 1,964 will be made (get it – 1964)! The Limited Edition will be offered in just two colors, Wimbledon White or Kona Blue.

This special model is based on the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang GT and it comes with the added Performance Pack. The Mustang GT performance pack includes oversized, six-piston Brembo front brakes and 19-inch alloy wheels with high- performance Y-speed-rated Pirelli P-Zero summer tires. Besides that, it also has pretty much anything you can tick on the option list.

This Limited Edition 5.0-liter V-8 will be churning out a hefty 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. As for options, the only choice is whether to go for a six-speed stick or automatic. The latter is paired with a limited-slip differential and a 3.55:1 final drive. The manual gets a Torsen differential and a 3.73:1 final-drive ratio.

One of the most distinctive touches added to the Limited Edition is the return of the "pony and corral" chromed logo found on the original 1964 and 1965 Mustangs. It will be used only the 50th anniversary edition and once again retired. The new 2015 model – and the Limited Edition, in particular – should generate some serious enthusiasm!

Inside, the 50 Year Limited Edition model gets a cashmere-stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel, with the stitching also used on the instrument panel, shifter boot, center armrest, door inserts and seats. And the seats feature exclusive two-tone cashmere and black leather upholstery, along with the Mustang 50 Year logo on the seat backs.

Also, Ford Motor Company had compiled a list of what they consider the Mustang Milestones and car styles for use by the media. We thank Ford for this list. Click HERE to see this impressive display . . .

1967 Cadillac Eldorado Test

1967 Cadillac Eldorado Road Test

Car Life Magazine tested the Cadillac Eldorado shortly after its introduction. Interestingly, they compared it to a Cessna 310. Most significant was that they reported that Eldorado was giving Cadillac its "greatest-ever sales". See why the orders were 3 months backed up even though production was 1,900 per month.

Cars Magazine titled their March 1968 Road Runner test "The Bird to Beat." They were surprised by its mid-14 second quarter mile times, its good handling and its bargain-basement price. See what else they liked and what the test results were.

1967 442 W-30 Test 1967 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Road Test

Cars Magazine asked "can a breath of fresh air put 442 on the drag map?"Their conclusion? "Olds is producing a fully competitive car with nice street manners". As all testers did back then, they were impressed with the 442's handling. (Kudos to the Olds engineers for never abandoning that aspect of the car). Read the test and see why the 1967 W-30 set the table for all the W-Packages to follow.
