1968 Mercury Cyclone 428CJ Test7 Test
1968 Mercury 428 Cyclone CJ Test

Mercury had been pushing performance cars real hard since 1963 when they jumped on the 427 bandwagon with the 427 side oiler Super Marauder. And once the mid-size car got the 289, they were right in there with Ford - but with a more luxurious twist. BUT when the 428CJ came out they were smokin' in the mid-size muscle car wars. Check out this intro test from Motor Trend and see it you agree!

1968 Hurst Olds Test
  1968 Hurst/Olds Road Test

You may not know it, but GM had placed a 400 CID limit on mid-sized muscle when the GTO was introduced in 1964 and that ban would run until 1970. On the street, GM's bad boys were gettin' the big hurt when they faced off against Fords and Mopars. How to get around it? Have George Hurst build one for you - and that's what Olds did - sending 442s to Hurst to add in the 455 with W-30 pieces. See how this bombshell landed back in 1968!

1965 427 Cobra Ads
  1965 Shelby Cobra Ad: "FourTwentySeven"

By 1965 the 289 Cobra was still kicking butt on the track, but it was starting to fall into the clutches of big block Corvettes and larger engined Ferraris. Carroll was thinking on it but, the AC chassis could not handle the big bad 427 - it was a dog. Ford stepped in and designed an all-new chassis that AC clothed in modified sheet metal - and the rest is history. Kowabunga, the 427 Cobra was born.

1969 Ford fairlane Cobra Test   1967 Dodge Hemi Charger Road Test

Everyone knows that the release of the "Street Hemi" in 1966 astounded the enthusiast world, but what few may know is that 1967Hemi Dodge Chargers were the rarest of the rare. Only 118 were produced in 1967, doubtless because the price tag was very high. Did they run hard? You betcha - check out this Car Life Magazine test and see!

1967 Corvette Brochure
1966 Corvette Brochure

By 1966 the Corvette's reputation was firmly established as the premier affordable sports car, but what really cemented that idea was the formidable 427-engined cars from Chevrolet. Maybe they couldn't quite go to to toe with the Cobra on the track, but on the street? Unstoppable. Check out this neat brochure and see what a great selection there was of mild to wild Corvettes.

1970 AMX Test 1970 American Motors AMX Road Test

By 1970, the AMX was well established, but what loomed on the horizon was the unleaded gas situation, and AMC was prepared. They began to release their new "GEN 3" V8's which were basically stroked GEN 2 engines - increasing CID to make up for anticipated lost HP. For the performance big engine, however, the CID stayed the same for 1970 even though the block was a high deck unit - why we'll never know - it went to 401 CID in the next year. Regardless, the AMX 390 was one heck of a performer as you will see in this test!
