This Ford Lightning has Thunder!

1993 Ford Lightning

A stock looking front end -- except for those small "427" badges on the scoop.
I'd be careful here!!

1993 427 CID Windsor Block

That's 427 cubes of supercharged and injected engine in there.

Lightnig's Upgraded interior

The interior is elegant - including 2003 Mustang Cobra Seats.

Ford’s 1993-95 F-150 SVT Lightning Get's a Little Help

Ford’s 1993 F-150 SVT Lightning was one quick truck. With a 351 (5.8 L) Windsor V8 and Ford’s best heads, the truck was good for 240 HP @ 3,600 RPM. An 8.8 rear with 4.10:1 LSD gears made for quick starts. While the stock Lightning was quick, Alex Bernal of Menlo Park, CA wanted more – lots more.

Alex is a metal fabricator who loves superchargers. Since he acquired the truck in 1997, it wasn’t long before he had mounted a GMC 6-71 blower on the truck for added go-fast power. In Alex’s words, he’s tried a lot of blowers. If that wasn’t enough to add some thunder to this Lightning, Alex had the 351 bored and stroked to displace 427 cu.in. Now that’s some motor!

Using his metal skills, Alex took an Edelbrock intake for a 351 and cut about 5” off the top. He inserted an intercooler in the manifold and fabricated an adapter to mount a Whipple 3.4 cu. in supercharger on the 427. Once again, using his skills, Alex fabricated the “top hat” on the blower and mounted 8 injectors (plus 4 in the intake) to fuel the beast. And fuel it needs – Alex installed a 33 gallon fuel tank from a Ford Bronco with a single pump to keep the good juices flowing to that hungry motor.

To expel the spent fuel, Alex used a set of Mac’s Headers for a Mustang with 3” pipes to the rear.  So far, the engine has dyno’d at over 500 hp @ 4,600 RPM before running out of fuel. Alex plans to install a second electric fuel pump to let that supercharged and injected engine reach its full potential – I can’t wait !

The really cool part of this entire project is the fact that the truck is deceptively stock in appearance. It is the stock Ford red offered in 1993 (the only other color from Ford was black) and totally devoid of any emblems or decals. The only “tip off” that all is not as it appears is a stock 1982 Mustang hood scoop with Ford’s “427” emblems on the side. You better believe these are not for show!

Help Us Grow Our Collections - Donate NOW!

Do you know how big our collection is? If it were in paper, stacked floor to ceiling, it would fill a 10'x10'x10' room to the top! The Automotive History Preservation Society needs your support to keep collecting and restoring these materials – our goal is ten 10x10 rooms!

The Society operates on the good graces of donations - and we grow in relation to the monies we receive. None of the donations pay for any staff – they are volunteers.

We use the gifts for our high-end web services, scanning services, and the publication and e-mailing of this No Limits e-magazine. We have educational projects with high schools and colleges that need your financial help – this is how we work to “preserve the past for the future”.

Anyone who donates $25.00 or more automatically becomes a member of the Society. You can donate more - and we'll gladly say “thank you” with some neat gifts. Click HERE to see them!

So if you like what we are doing - please support us! Please donate - and join the people who recognize the value of preserving our automotive history. If you count yourself as an auto enthusiast, membership in the AHPS is the best dollar for dollar investment you will find.
